Due to increased fire activity surrounding the Enterprise, Alberta, NWT border, Highway 1 has been closed as of 5 a.m. this morning.

There are no current fire threats to Enterprise or Hay River, but heavy smoke from fires further to the west and south is affecting visibility.

“Wildfire season has started in the NWT. Road conditions can change quickly with little to no warning. Please drive with caution and be prepared for delays and potential road closures,” reads the NWT’s Highway conditions page.

The Mackenzie Highway is one of the few ways of travelling in and out of the territory.

CKLB will have more as the situation develops.
