Karin L.E. Taylor has become a Judge of the Supreme Court of the NWT, appointed by Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada Arif Virani. Taylor takes the baton from Karan Shaner, who was elevated to the Court of Appeal of Alberta on June 20.
Taylor has been the Director of the Legal Division at the GNWT since 2020. She has served as the Executive of the Law Society of the NWT and Chair of the Territorial Access to Justice Committee.
She also volunteered for several non-profit organizations including Vice President of both the Young Women’s Christian Association NWT and the Yellowknife Community Foundation. She was lead counsel during the National Inquiry on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls and COVID-19 response.
Taylor received the 2012 Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for her contribution to the community. This medal was given to individuals who have made significant contributions to a particular province, territory or region within Canada.
“I wish Justice Taylor every success as she takes on her new role. I am confident she will serve the public well as a member of the Supreme Court of the Northwest Territories,” says Arif Virani, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada.
Virani has appointed more than 130 judges since he took office on July 26, 2023.
