NWT Fire information officer Mike Westwick says in a Thursday fire update that the Edzo wildfire, also known as ZF011, has been held at 230 hectares.
This lightning-caused fire started on the west shores of Marian Lake on June 30. An evacuation notice was issued for the community of Edzo due to increased risks on Tuesday.
“With hard-won firefighting gains over the last two days, the status of the fire has been updated to Being Held,” says Westwick.
This means that this fire is not expected to grow with continued firefighting efforts and expected weather.
Westwick says there is still a lot of work to be done, the fire is not yet under control and fire crews will continue to manage this fire.
A structure protection specialist has been deployed for the community to safeguard homes, cabins, and infrastructures in case the fire grows to the south towards Edzo.
Today’s rainy weather has kept the fire activity relatively low, and a chance of showers tonight is expected to help with firefighting efforts further.
