The Legislative Assembly is going to look very different next week.
During election night on Tuesday, seven incumbent MLAs, including two cabinet ministers and the speaker of the house, were defeated: Ronald Bonnetrouge of Dehcho; Katrina Nokleby of Great Slave; Rocky Simpson of Hay River South; Diane Archie of Inuvik Boot Lake; Frederick Blake, Jr. of Mackenzie Delta; Paulie Chinna of Sahtu; and Frieda Martselos of Thebacha.
New faces to the Legislative Assembly include former Yellowknife city councillors Julian Morse and Shauna Morgan, and deputy Mayor of Fort Smith Jay MacDonald. Also returning are several past MLAs who were defeated in the last election, including Yellowknife Centre’s Robert Hawkins, Range Lake’s Kieron Testart, and Sahtu’s Daniel McNeely.
Just four incumbents defeated their challengers: Hay River North’s R.J. Simpson; Inuvik Twin Lakes’s Lesa Semmler; Nahendeh’s Shane Thompson; and Tu Nedhé-Wiilideh’s Richard Edjericon
Three were acclaimed — Caitlin Cleveland of Kam Lake, Jane Weyallon-Armstrong of Monfwi, and Caroline Wawzonek of Yellowknife South — while the remaining five chose not to run again.
According to the unofficial results, just over 10,900 voters turned out for the election, or about one quarter of the population.
Members will be sworn in on Nov. 24, three days after the first sitting on Nov. 21. Members will then elect a Premier on Dec. 7.
