A 20-year-old male driver is facing several charges after injuring both a security guard and an RCMP officer in an impaired driving incident in Yellowknife.
The incident took place shortly after 3:00 a.m. on Saturday, when the driver struck a security guard with his vehicle. The security guard was trying to stop the impaired driver from leaving in his vehicle.
A second call came in shortly after that the same driver was driving in the wrong lane of traffic.
Police tried to initiate a traffic stop, at which point the driver accelerated and struck an RCMP vehicle. The collision was serious enough to trigger the airbag and injure the officer inside.
It was not immediately clear if the collision was intentional.
The officer and the security guard were taken to Stanton Territorial Hospital, treated and released. The driver was not injured in the incident.
He is now facing multiple charges, including impaired operation causing bodily harm, assault on a police officer with a weapon, and assault with a weapon. An investigation is ongoing.
