Since 1967 the Northwest Territories has participated in both Canada Winter and Canada Summer Games, and every Arctic Winter Games since 1970.

It is estimated that over 13,000 athletes, coaches, mission staff and officials have represented the NWT in these multi-sport events.

The 2026 Arctic Winter Games is comprised of 20 sports, in four categories: Traditional Sports, Nordic Sports, Indoor Sports, and Ice Sports.

Last Thursday through Saturday, competitors in 15 sports competed for a spot on Team NT in events in Yellowknife and Dettah.

CKLB will publish the full list once it’s released by Sport North.

CKLB will be at the 2026 event in Whitehorse, continuing our tradition of bringing the stories and images from the Arctic Winter Games of interest to our listeners and readers.

In addition to the NWT, Alaska, Alberta North, Greenland, Nunavik, Nunavut, Sápmi, and Yukon will compete in the March 8 to 15 games.

Whitehorse is the host community, along with Ta’an Kwäch’än Council and the Kwanlin Dün First Nation.

Whitehorse previously hosted in 1972, 1980, 1992, 2000, 2007, and 2012. It was also selected to host the 2020 Games, which were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
