More vehicles, more drivers and record bridge tolls in latest reports
There were 532 reported collisions in 2024, with two traffic fatalities, which is lower than the 35-year average
There was a record number of vehicles registered and active driver’s licenses in the NWT by December 2024, states reports issued Wednesday by the GNWT.
The numbers include:
- 43,164 vehicles were registered in the NWT by December 2024, marking a record high for the second consecutive year; and
- 27,442 individuals held active driver’s licenses, also reaching another record high.
Deh Cho Bridge toll revenue for 2024/2025 revenue is $4,748,477, or about 15% greater than in 2023/2024 — the most revenue generated in one year since the bridge opened in 2012.
Deh Cho Bridge during 2024/2025:
- 30,066 permits were issued;
- 656 CVSA inspections were conducted; and
- There were 120 commercial transport-related convictions under the Transportation of
Dangerous Goods Act and Regulations as well as under commercial transport-related
regulations pursuant to the Motor Vehicles Act.

During the 2024/2025 fiscal year, there were 216 convictions under the Criminal Code, a 2.9 % increase from the previous fiscal year. There were 1,384 convictions under the Motor Vehicles Act. This is a 14.3 % decrease from 2023/2024.
Most collisions happened between November to March and driver error was the most frequent factor in collisions, contributing to 71% of incidents, while environmental factors accounted for 4%.
There was a decrease in the number of clients receiving demerit points but an increase in suspensions issued compared to the previous year.
There were more school buses (28) than fire engines (16) across the entire NWT.
There were 16 licensed drivers 90 years and older.
There were more pickup trucks (12,740) registered than passenger cars (11,804).
Collisions involving alcohol jumped 23.8%, to 26 from 21.
