In the most recent session of the Legislative Assembly, Members approved the 2026-27 Capital Estimates, which will allow for further funding opportunities for crucial infrastructure projects in the NWT.

These estimates include as much as $436 million to go to different projects and communities across the north such as housing, healthcare, and economic development. How these estimates will be used will be determined by guidelines laid out in the GNWT’s Fiscal Responsibility Policy.

Some of the key projects that this money will be put towards include the Dehk’e Frank Channel Bridge, and planning for the Mackenzie Valley Highway and Arctic Economic Security Corridor. Options are also being explored for renewable energy investments such as the Fort Providence Transmission Line and the Taltson Hydro expansion.

Caroline Wawzonek, the Minister of Finance, stated in a release: “These investments reflect our commitment to building strong, healthy communities and a resilient economy and will help lay the foundation for long-term growth and improving the lives of residents across the Northwest Territories.

“In a time of economic uncertainty, we are choosing to invest in the infrastructure that matters most to Northerners—housing, healthcare, and community connections—while maintaining a disciplined approach that balances long-term opportunity with fiscal responsibility.”

The Capital Estimates will be divided among all regions of the NWT. South Slave will receive 24%, Beaufort Delta will receive 20%, Tłı̨chǫ will receive 15%, North Slave will receive 13%, Dehcho will receive 10%,  Sahtu will receive 3%, and 15% will be put aside for Territorial projects.
