Construction on new YK residential building paused for winter season
Certain materials will be built out-of-territory over the winter months
After several months of solid progress, construction on the new 50-unit residential building in Yellowknife has paused for the winter season.
During the pause, construction materials will still be developed at an off-site location, ready to be shipped in when construction resumes next Spring. Some components will be built in B.C., at the Kalesnikoff Mass Timber Facility. With these extra materials being constructed over the winter, once they arrive in Yellowknife, they will be able to be installed much faster than usual.

So far, the foundations for the new building have been set, as well as the underground plumbing and mechanical systems. Connections have also been made to the municipal services, and backfill materials have been placed around the building. Plans are also in place to include solar panels and renewable space heating systems.
This building is being constructed along 50th Street as part of the city’s effort to bring more residents and activity to the downtown area. The spot was chosen based on the land available throughout the city, as well as it being nearby a number of different businesses and services.

Once it is fully completed, this new complex will include 25 units that are easily accessible for seniors and those with disabilities, and 25 two-bedroom units for those with small families.
Construction will continue in Spring of 2026, and is expected to be completed in Spring of 2027.
