The community of Whatì has declared a state of emergency and ordered a full evacuation Friday morning as a nearby wildfire continues to threaten the area.

The evacuation order, issued at 10 a.m., directs all residents to leave immediately. Evacuees are asked to register at the Whatì Cultural Centre before departing.

Reception centres are being set up in Behchokǫ̀ and Yellowknife to support those displaced.

Yellowknife Mayor Ben Hendriksen say the Fieldhouse and Multi-plex gym will be used to support evacuees from Whatì, and will be unavailable for public use for the near future.

Some city services may be slower or affected as staff are working alongside the community government of Whatì to accommodate evacuees in Yellowknife.

Residents can go to the GNWT’s public safety website for timely updates.
