Two people were arrested and a number of drugs were seized in Behchokǫ̀ last weekend during a routine traffic stop.

The stop occurred on Sunday, August 17th just before 5:30. Officers were patrolling the community and pulled the suspect vehicle over to conduct a sobriety check. As soon as the officers got a look inside the vehicle, they noticed several open cannabis products. The two occupants were then arrested for violations of the Cannabis Act.

A further search of the vehicle revealed around 286 grams of crack-cocaine.

The suspects, 19-year-old Brock Mercredi, and a 16-year-old male, were both charged with Possession for the purpose of trafficking. They have both made an appearance in front of a Justice of the Peace, and have been returned to custody.

The RCMP have stated that while the quantity of drugs seized in this incident may be small, it still represents a significant problem for a community as small as Behchokǫ̀.

Anyone who may have additional information on this matter can contact the Behchokǫ̀ RCMP at 867-392-1111.
