To help mark the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Tłı̨chǫ government, NWT Premier R.J. Simpson issued an official statement to mark its progress, calling it a “landmark achievement that reflected decades of vision, unity, and determination.”

Simpson remarks on how the Tłı̨chǫ government was the first in the NWT to combine a comprehensive land claim with a self-government agreement, which has since enshrined the Tłı̨chǫ Nation’s ability and right to make their own decisions in their own way.

“Since that time, the Tłı̨chǫ Government has become a leader in governance, land stewardship, and cultural revitalization, setting an example for others across Canada and around the world. The progress made over the past two decades shows what is possible when Indigenous governments and public governments work in true partnership, each bringing their strengths to serve the people of the North.”

Simpson says that much is owed to the Tłı̨chǫ leaders and Elders, as their dedication and persistence helped to make the Tłı̨chǫ Agreement became a reality, and their work continues to inspire people today.

“Here in the Northwest Territories, together we are shaping a model of governance that is rare in the world — one built on mutual respect, shared priorities, and the understanding that strong partnerships among governments lead to stronger, healthier communities.”

Simpson congratulates the citizens of the Tłı̨chǫ nation who continue to work to fulfill the vision of the Tłı̨chǫ Agreement. Simpson says that he hopes to continue with Tłı̨chǫ leaders to further build on a strong foundation.

“This is a proud milestone for the Tłı̨chǫ and for the Northwest Territories.”
