“As wildfires continue to affect many communities, we also recognize the leadership and deep land-based knowledge that Indigenous Peoples bring to fire management and environmental stewardship.”

The Tulip Lake wildfire is classified as ‘being held’ as crews continue to secure the fire’s perimeter and and to eliminate areas of heat
near the fire’s edge.

NWT Fire stated this work will continue until fire SS009 — 15 kilometres northeast of Fort Fitzgerald and 28 kilometres east of Fort Smith — is classified as ‘under control.’

“Today, remediation work began along the Axe Handle Trail. The timber cut to accommodate the high-volume sprinkler system will be
processed and stacked for now,” stated Thomas Bentham, wildfire information officer, in a Saturday afternoon release.

Elsewhere in the NWT, there have been no new fires in the past day and none of the 13 active wildfires at present pose a serious threat to communities.

However, here are two of note:

  • In the Dehcho region, wildfire FS009 is 38 kilometres east of Fort Liard, six kilometres northeast of Bovie Lake. This fire, caused by lightning, now spans approximately 500 hectares. Tankers continue battling the blaze, with a focus on the southwest flank. Crews are on site today with air support to continue suppression efforts. Structure protection is being established in the Bovie ake area.
  • And wildfire FS007 is 18 kilometres northeast of Wrigley, one kilometre north of Hodgson Creek. Crews are moving to the valley bottom to establish themselves and continue working to keep the fire north of Hodgins Creek. Community protection work continues to advance, with two of three lines nearly complete with sprinkler setups in town.
