Four new wildfires reported in Dehcho and North Slave regions

Crews are responding to the largest blaze near Root River northeast of Wrigley

Four new wildfires have been reported in the Dehcho and North Slave regions, according to Wednesday afternoon’s fire update from NWT Fire.

The largest is a 1,488-hectare fire (FS008) located about 50 kilometres northeast of Wrigley, near the Root River. While the cause is still under investigation, officials say the fire poses no threat to communities, cabins, or infrastructure at this time.

Two other lightning-caused fires were reported in the Dehcho region. One, labelled FS010, is under one hectare and located 45 kilometres east of Fort Simpson and 46 kilometres northeast of Jean Marie River.

The second (FS009) is 12 hectares in size and located 38 kilometres east of Fort Liard and 6 kilometres northeast of Bovie Lake. Airtankers responded to the fire late Tuesday, and ground crews are working on containment today. Structure protection is being set up near Bovie Lake as a precaution.

In the North Slave region, a new fire near the northern point of Taché Lake is estimated at 40 hectares. It currently poses no threat to nearby communities or infrastructure.

As of now, none of the new fires are considered a direct threat to any populated areas. NWT Fire continues to monitor and respond as conditions evolve.
