Two suspects have been arrested and charged with aggravated assault following a stabbing that took place in Fort Smith on June 14.

RCMP say they received a report that a person had been stabbed and seriously injured on a trail in the community on Saturday evening. The victim was flown out for medical treatment and is now in stable condition.

An investigation led officers to two suspects: 42-year-old Robert McDonald and 32-year-old Joshua Benwell, both from Fort Smith. They have each been charged with aggravated assault and assault with a weapon.

Benwell faces additional charges, as he was already under a release order for pending robbery, firearms, and other offences. He was also on probation for charges including drug possession, resisting arrest, and breaching court-ordered conditions.

Both men appeared before a Justice of the Peace and remain in custody.
