Aklavik hunters returned home safely

RCMP remind public to take proper precautions when venturing into wilderness

Two Aklavik hunters have been safely located after they were reported as overdue to the local RCMP.

The hunters last contacted their families around 3:00am on May 19th, where they reported they had become stuck in overflow slush near Fish River. They were officially reported as overdue at 5:00pm on the same day.

The RCMP quickly mobilized their Search Manager, as well as Civil Air Search and Rescue Association, which both partnered with local search efforts to find the duo. By 8:45 that evening, the hunters had been found, and were transported back to Aklavik with no injuries.

The RCMP have expressed their thanks to the community members who took part in the search efforts, and with longer days ahead, are warning northerners to be cautious when heading out on the land. Anyone going out in the wild is recommended to carry some form of communication at all times, such as a satellite phone or marine radio.

Inform friends and family of travel plans and when you expect to return. Dress properly for the conditions and bring extra clothes for emergencies.
