A municipal administrator is now running the Hamlet of Enterprise, after the GNWT dismissed the community’s entire council, citing urgent “governance, financial, and operational challenges,” says the minister in charge.
The tiny South Slave community of Enterprise — with a population of just 75 in 2021 — has faced leadership turmoil, with multiple councillors, a senior administrator and the newly elected mayor resigning in 2024.

Almost all of Enterprise burned to the ground during the historic wildfire season in 2023.
Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs Vince McKay determined the “exceptional measure” was necessary to stabilize operations, ensure good governance and address the challenges that have faced the Hamlet.
“I look forward to making progress so that order and transparency are prioritized and we can ensure a successful transition back to local governance as soon as possible,” McKay stated in a release.
Former Inuvik CEO Grant Hood will be Municipal Administrator for an indeterminate time.
Hood can perform the duties of the council under the Hamlets Act. Any new bylaws and budgets, will need to be approved by Minister McKay.
Residents can contact the Hood at the Hamlet Office if they have concerns or questions about community government operations.
Once McKay is satisfied that the governance and financial issues facing the Hamlet have been resolved, the Administration Order will be revoked.
