A 16-year-old from Saskatoon and a 21-year-old from Edmonton have been charged following reports of gunshots near a residence in Fort Resolution on April 26.

The Territorial Crime Reduction Unit — a specialized program aimed at tackling the illicit drug trade in the Northwest Territories — received a call about shots fired in the community around 10 p.m. on Saturday.

“Members attended the residence and spoke with the occupant but couldn’t confirm the allegations,” RCMP stated in a release Tuesday.

About 10 minutes later, two men attempted to flee the residence on foot. Police were able to arrest them without incident.

RCMP say they seized a loaded handgun, $955 in cash, and drug paraphernalia.

Following the investigation, the 16-year-old — who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act — is facing nine charges, including unauthorized possession of a prohibited firearm, uttering threats to property or an animal, and failure to comply with a probation order.

Yohannes Tekle, 21, of Edmonton has been charged with obstructing a peace officer and uttering threats to property or an animal.

“This investigation is one of many examples of the positive impact these specialized programs have had on combating illicit drug trafficking in the territory,” RCMP said.

Anyone with information about this incident or other illegal activity is asked to contact Fort Resolution RCMP at 867-394-1111 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
