The MLA for Mackenzie Delta has taken a leave of absence and entered a treatment program after being charged with impaired driving in Fort McPherson, state media reports.
George Nerysoo’s leave of absence was first reported this week by the CBC, which stated the first-term MLA had posted about his situation on Facebook in early April. Those posts are no longer available.
Nerysoo was elected in the fall of 2023 to the 20th Assembly.
He began a treatment course in B.C. on April 9, which will last for several months, which means he will miss some committee work this month and the short house sitting in May.
Cabin Radio reported Nerysoo had informed the NWT Assembly in March of his intention to attend treatment.
As a Regular MLA, Nerysoo had been outspoken against the illegal drug trade. In the last sitting of the Assembly in March, said complaints of trafficking in public housing are ignored by authorities at all levels.
