19 communities in the NWT will receive a total of $93 million from the federal government to support housing, as announced by NWT MP Michael McLeod on Thursday.

Those communities are from the Akaitcho and Dehcho regions, with Łı́ı́dlı̨ı̨ Kų́ę́ First Nation in Fort Simpson receiving the largest share at $16.54 million. The Fort Simpson Métis Local will receive more than $230,000.

This investment builds on previous federal funding for Indigenous housing in the NWT, including $34 million for Métis governments in 2022 and $8 million for the NWT Métis Nation and North Slave Métis Alliance in 2021. First Nations in the two regions also received a $10 million investment in 2021.

“Our government’s record of investing in housing here in the Northwest Territories is strong,” stated McLeod. “During my time as your Member of Parliament, we have delivered over $700 million toward housing in the NWT.”
