The Town of Hay River is getting more than $565,000 in federal funding to enhance its golf course and campground, announced by NWT MP Michael McLeod on Thursday.
The investment will go toward installing new greens, expanding the campground, and upgrading the clubhouse with infrastructure such as catering and audio-visual equipment.
“We’re helping to improve a critical piece of infrastructure for Hay River residents to gather, meet, play and come together as neighbors,” said McLeod. “The town will benefit from significant public growth in the coming years.”
Kandis Jameson, the mayor of Hay River, said this investment will enhance tourism and increase visitation to the community.
“Hay River’s spectacular natural environments and exceptional recreational amenities attract thousands of visitors each year, not only to our town, but to the surrounding area,” said Jameson.
“With the pending upgrades to the Hay River golf course, we are poised to establish our reputation as a premier golf camping and event destination in the Northwest Territories.”
The announcement was made on behalf of Gary Anandasangaree, the Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs, and Minister responsible for Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency.
