A muskox in the Thaıdene Nëné area has been reported with signs of Orf, also known as contagious pustular dermatitis.

It’s essentially a very aggressive cold sore that can be transmitted to humans if exposed. Pus-filled blisters and thick scabs can be found on the animals’ lips, mouth, nose and eyelids, ears, udders and above the hoof.

Although the disease is infectious it is not, however, life-threatening.

Residents are advised to not handle the animal without gloves and to cut around the infected area to preserve the meat when harvesting.

Residents are also encouraged to collect samples and take notes regarding the animal’s location and photos to send to their local Environment and Climate Change office.

Folks may also send an email with their findings to WildlifeVeterinarian@gov.nt.ca.
