Inuvik RCMP are warning residents about fake Canadian bills printed with Chinese characters after receiving several reports.

The Chinese characters translate to ‘counting practice bill’, with a line at the bottom stating ‘for counting practice only, circulations are forbidden’.

These particular bills caused similar issues when they first appeared seven years ago.

According to a 2017 CBC report, police found about 9,000 fake bills in varying denominations across Canada. A man was sentenced for possessing these bills after a judge ruled they qualify as counterfeits despite the writing.

Inuvik RCMP asks residents to pay close attention to any bills used in transactions. When dealing with suspected counterfeit currency, refuse the note and advise the person to have it checked by police.

Residents with information about fake bills are asked to contact to Inuvik RCMP at 777-1111 or Crime Stoppers at www.p3tips.com.
