Délı̨nę̨ under evacuation notice as wind expected to push fire closer

Extreme northwest winds of up to 70km/h are expected throughout today

The Délı̨nę Got’ı̨nę Government issued an evacuation notice on Monday evening as a precautionary measure due to a wildfire near the Great Bear River.

“There are strong winds predicted over the next day that may cause the fire to spread,” reads a release by the community government.

NWT Fire says that extreme northwest winds of up to 70km/h are expected on Monday evening and throughout Tuesday. Additional crews and resources have arrived in Délı̨nę yesterday to access structure protection.

An evacuation notice is the first step to inform residents of an increased risk to the community and could endanger life or property. When situation worsens, residents will be told to prepare to leave on short notice under an evacuation alert. If an evacuation order is issued, residents must leave immediately and follow directions from officials.

The risk to Délı̨nę̨ is currently low and does not pose an immediate threat to the community, cabins, and infrastructure. The community government says an alert will be issued if threat level increase.

Residents are advised to monitor news sources and stay informed about the situation. Doors and windows should be kept closed, and masks are recommended when heading outside.
