Wildfire Update: As of 3:45 the Town of Fort Smith declared the fire contained.

One new fire has sprung in Fort Smith and has burned over 100 hectares since reported this afternoon.

The fire is located on Axe Handle Hill, Parks Drive, McDougal Rd, and Pine Crescent.

“Structure protection is in place on the south side and water bombers are inbound,” reads an alert.

Residents are warned to steer clear of the area as roadblocks will be put in place.

The cause of the fire is still unknown and no damage to property has been reported.

Alberta and Parks Canada have also each sent a helicopter crew to assist, says the town in a post to social media.

A Fort Smith resident told CKLB that the power had also been shut off.

More to come as the situation develops.
