Two fast-growing wildfires Monday evening prompted a precautionary evacuation of the Little Buffalo River area.

A short distance away, Fort Resolution is also on alert, as windy conditions across the South Slave region push to the North at 10 to 15 km/h per hour.

Fire SS040 (24 kms south of Fort Resolution, 4.5 kms south of Little Buffalo) and SS042 (2.7 kms east of SS040) were reported early Monday evening, stated a GNWT spokesperson.

“Wildland firefighters with air support crews were quick to respond to the reports of smoke in the area at around 5:30 p.m.,” stated Thomas Bentham in a release.

“With both fires being so close to camps and cabins in the area, Fort Resolution SAO has recommended everyone in the Little Buffalo area evacuate as a precaution.”

Aircraft from Yellowknife, Fort Smith and Hay River were dispatched to perform fire suppression action, focusing on the northern line of the fire.

Air support continues as required to keep fire intensity low to assist the two ground crews.
