An overwinter fire in the South Slave region that posed no threat to communities, cabins, or infrastructure and has been extinguished.
The fire was discovered through infrared scanning and patrols about seven kilometres north-northeast of Enterprise and 27 kilometres south of Hay River on the far side of the river from these communities.
Mike Westwick is the wildfire information officer with Environment and Natural Resources.
“The team quickly brought it under control after discovery today (Sunday). No communities, cabins, or infrastructure are at risk,” he stated.
The report noted two overwinter fires in the vicinity of Fort Smith and Salt River First Nation reported last week have been declared out.
In the Dehcho region, two overwinter fires less than one square-kilometre in size were also detected using infrared scanners and are being extinguished by crews.
One fire is near the east shore of Tetcho Lake, with the other about 14 kilometres north of the B.C. border.
Neither pose risks to communities, cabins, or infrastructure.
However, the fire risk today for the South Slave and Dehcho range from extreme to high, with the warm temperatures.
There are no active fires in the Beaufort Delta, Sahtu or North Slave regions. Fire risk is graded as low.
