Planning, preparation of ‘absolute importance’ say RCMP after search and rescue operation

After the successful rescue of an overdue traveller in the East Arm area this week, RCMP urge people to plan and prepare for conditions before heading out on the land.

On Wednesday, RCMP were contacted and advised of an overdue traveller who had not arrived in Łutselk’e as planned.

A group of people had encountered the overdue traveller on the land, stated a media release.

They reported the individual was not dressed properly or equipped with gear to match the conditions or the distance they intended to travel, read the release.

A search and rescue operation was initiated.

Officials say this incident serves as a reminder of the absolute importance of preparing before going out on the land.

Difficult conditions, mechanical failures of equipment and injury are all possibilities and the difference between a positive outcome and a tragedy, often comes down to preparation.

Such as making sure your method of transportation is in good working order and to carry extra fuel and emergency supplies — including a means of communication.

Also, inform someone of one’s travel plans, where you are going, when you intend to arrive and what route you are taking.
