The situation in Behchokǫ has worsened, with 100 active COVID-19 cases reported comes new public health orders.
As of 5 p.m. Oct. 4, Dr. Kami Kandola, the chief public health officer, has extended the public health order in Behchokǫ announced last month to include new travel restrictions.
Without proof of vaccination, some travellers may not be allowed in and out of the community.
According to a health advisory, if travellers do not have or show proof of vaccination, a negative COVID-19 test is required upon entering or exiting the community.
The COVID-19 assessment card is valid for up to 72-hours and the test must be taken on the same day of travel.
Those without proof of vaccination status, who have had COVID-19 and recovered in the last 180 days are required to get a letter of exemption from the office of the chief public health officer (OCPHO).
If the individual was positive and from outside the NWT they will need to send their lab results to CPHO@gov.nt.ca.
Those with a medical emergency including a companion, some doctor’s appointments, essential workers, supply chain workers, those supervised by a peace officer and children under two years old may be exempt from additional testing or proof of vaccine status.
Residents travelling for medical appointments require a note from the NWT Health Authority.
Enforcement will be exercised by Behchokǫ̀ security with support from the COVID Secretariat’s Compliance and Enforcement operations.
The order is set to expire on Oct. 18 at 11:59 p.m.
