A damaged fibre cable in a remote area of northern British Columbia was the source of phone service disruptions across the NWT yesterday, according to NorthwesTel.

“Long-distance phone services were impacted in (the) NWT and Nunavut as well as a result of this event, as was internet service in Ulukhaktok,” reads a statement by the company.

Technicians repaired the damage early Thursday morning.

“We continue to test our systems and ensure all services are restored,” adds the statement.

The RCMP is reporting a disruption to phone services across the Northwest Territories.

“Cell phone, long distance calling, and landline services have been impacted with services down or operating intermittently,” reads a news release.

It adds that most NWT communities are affected in addition to the Yellowknife area.

Emergency phone services may have technical difficulties, including when trying to reach RCMP detachments and 911 calls.

On Wednesday evening, the territory sent out an emergency alert advising residents of the issue.

It said if residents had an emergency requiring 911 to call 867-765-8337 instead.

“If the line is busy, please immediately call back,” reads the alert.
