The Yellowknife-Dettah ice road officially opened Friday, January 11.

The Department of Infrastructure says the road is safe for vehicles weighing up to 5,000 kilograms and the weight limit will go up as conditions allow.

Over the past 15 years, the average opening date was December 23, but the last few years have seen the date pushed back to early and mid-January.

It’s expected to be open until April.
