The Tłı̨chǫ winter road system linking Behchoko, Whati, Gameti and Wekweekti is to close Friday morning at 10:00.

That’s according to a tweet from the NWT Department of Infrastructure which oversees the territory’s roads and highways.

It also points out that the last time drivers can use the road this season is Thursday night at 10:00.

The road has been on night time restriction since mild weather hit the NWT last month.

The entire road system is restricted to high clearance vehicles only and drivers are still being advised to watch for rough sections.

Meanwhile, The Dettah Ice Road, linking Dettah and Yellowknife, closed for the season at 10:00 Thursday morning.

Infrastructure department officials are reminding the public that it is illegal and unsafe to drive on a closed winter road.

They also point out that the fine for driving on a closed winter road is $863.

The department says that the Aklavik ice road and the two ice crossings in the Beaufort Delta region remain open but that drivers should use caution and check the Infrastructure Department website for updates.

They also thank the public for making the winter road season a relatively safe one in the NWT.
