RCMP are investigating a suspicious death in Behchoko which is believed to have happened Monday.

Mounties issued a news release on Tuesday afternoon updating what they described Monday as a ‘serious unfolding incident.’

Police state a male was found unresponsive and was transported to the Behchoko Health Centre where he was declared deceased.

They do not say where or when the man was discovered.

His name has been reported on both mainstream and social media but CKLB is not using the name at this time out of respect for the family.

Police do state that their Yellowknife-based Major Crimes Unit as well as the Forensic Identification Unit as well as police dogs and their handlers have all been called in to help in the investigation.

According to their latest news release, officers were dispatched from Yellowknife at about 1:00 pm Monday to assist Behchoko RCMP.

RCMP say they are now working with the NWT Coroner Service in an investigation into the suspicious death.

“The investigation is in early stages with no further information at this time as officers conduct the investigation.” police stated.

It now appears that a lockdown involving local schools and agencies was not related to the suspicious death.

Police have not made it clear whether anyone has been arrested or charged or whether there was any threat to the public.
