It appears that Phillip Blake will stay on as chief of the Gwichya Gwich’in Band in Tsiigehtchic.

He won Monday’s election with 59 total votes, ten votes ahead of his closest competitor Russel Andre.

Grace Blake and Jason McLeod Blake finished third and fourth respectively in the balloting.

Just under 400 people were eligible to vote.

Russell Andre won last year’s election in June, but the decision was overturned after Phillip Blake said the election code hadn’t been followed appropriately.

Under the Gwichya Gwich’in Band Custom Election Code the results are considered preliminary until the end of the appeal period at 5:00 pm on March 21st.

Five councillors were acclaimed to their positions.
