Stacie Smith was sworn in along with the rest of Yellowknife city council and new mayor Rebecca Alty at a ceremony at city hall Monday.

Smith is the newest and only Indigenous member of city council.

She says she does not feel any pressure from the city’s Indigenous community, but at the same time admits that it is a large responsibility to represent her people and all Yellowknifers on city council.

The 34-year-old Smith, a lifelong resident of Yellowknife, says she fully intends to keep her flower shop business.

Territorial Education, Culture and Employment Minister Caroline Cochrane was among those in attendance.

The ceremony was opened by the Yellowknives Dene drummers.
