Hay River woman pleads guilty to selling cocaine to undercover officer

A Hay River woman is to be sentenced on February 26th after she pleaded guilty this week to trafficking cocaine in the summer of 2017.

25-year-old Starr Martel was caught up in what RCMP called Operation Grand Slam, which targeted a slo-pitch tournament in Hay River in August of last year.

The Mounties’ operation led to at least nine people being charged, six of them from Hay River.

Martel was convicted in court in Yellowknife this week for selling an undercover officer 80 dollars worth of cocaine at a dance during the tournament.

She was arrested and charged a few days later when police stopped a vehicle she was riding in.

Mounties conducted five search warrants on homes in Hay River as part of Operation Grand Slam.

They reportedly seized cocaine, morphine, GHB, codeine, cash and a butterfly knife.
