The economy of the Mackenzie Delta has always been boom and bust and dependent on the oil and gas industry and government for employment opportunities.
Former NWT Minister Michael Miltenberger was told that Inuvik was considered a “sweet spot” for downloading data from satellites. The only problem; reliable and high speed internet to transmit the data from the satellites to the rest of the world.
“Come to Inuvik, it’s geographically gifted”
The government of the day acted quickly and had a fibre optic line constructed to ensure data from the satellites could be easily transmitted.
Now that the fibre optic line is complete, the only thing holding up opportunities in the Delta is Federal Government red tape.
