UN declares 2019 the Year of Indigenous Languages

The United Nations has declared 2019 as the International Year of Indigenous Languages.
 
With the declaration, the UN aims to raise awareness of the consequences of the endangerment of Indigenous languages across the world.
 
It also wants to establish a link between language, development, peace, and reconciliation.
 
There are 11 official languages in the Northwest Territories – nine of which are Indigenous.
 
All of them are deemed to be endangered to varying degrees.    
 
CKLB currently broadcasts if four Indigenous languages with a fifth to be added soon.
