Dene Nation moves re-scheduled Assembly ahead one week

Third time’s a charm for the Dene Nation, as Wednesday it changed the dates of the 56th Dene National Assembly, less than a week after it announced a move to Kátł’odeeche First Nation from wildfire-affected Łı́ı́dlı̨ı̨ Kų́ę́ First Nation.

The revised dates of September 29th to October 1st, were set in consultation with the Chief and Council of Kátł’odeeche First Nation, “to ensure the fullest possible participation of Dene leadership,” stated Dene National Chief George Mackenzie in a Wednesday afternoon release.

“The Dene Nation acknowledges this is the third adjustment to the Assembly schedule and thanks members and communities for their patience and understanding.”

The new meeting dates are a week sooner than those first announced on August 20th. This could cause concern for attendees who have already made travel/lodging plans.

The original change was due to the ongoing wildfire situation in the Dehcho Region and out of concern for the safety and well-being of delegates.

While the community of Fort Simpson and the Łı́ı́dlı̨ı̨ Kų́ę́ First Nation are not in any further threat from wildfires, there is still a lot of smoke from blazes further afield.

The Dene Assembly will bring together Dene leadership, Elders, youth, citizens, and communities from across Denendeh, to discuss shared priorities, strengthen relationships, and “advance a strong and united Dene Nation,” stated the release.

More details for community representatives on registration, travel, accommodations, and the Assembly’s program will be released as they are confirmed.
