Vehicle collision ends in brief chase and nearly 20 charges
The suspect fled from Yellowknife RCMP in stolen van; illegal rifle and ammunition seized
A young man in Yellowknife is facing nearly twenty charges after a hit & run occurred near the local Walmart.
On August 6th, an RCMP bicycle patrol was alerted to a motor vehicle collision where an SUV struck another vehicle and then fled the scene, stated a release.
The officers were able to find the vehicle not too far away with the driver standing outside. Once the driver saw the police approaching, he got back into the vehicle and drove away.
The vehicle was later found abandoned at a dead-end. A search for the suspect was conducted with the help of G Division Police Dog Services, and a remote piloted aircraft, read the release.
The suspect was found hiding in some nearby bushes, where they were then taken into custody.
A search of the suspect revealed a level of intoxication, and that he was also in possession of a folding rifle and ammunition. The vehicle itself was found to have been recently stolen.
The suspect, 26-year-old Clayton Koe, has received the following charges:
- Careless use of a firearm,
- Carrying a concealed weapon,
- Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle,
- Failure to comply with conditions of an undertaking,
- Flight from a peace officer,
- Operation of a conveyance with a blood-alcohol content exceeding 80mg of alcohol per 100mL of blood,
- Operation of a conveyance while impaired,
- Possession of a prohibited weapon while knowing possession is unauthorized,
- Possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle,
- Possession of property obtained by crime under $5000,
- Possession of property obtained by crime over $5000,
- Possession of a prohibited firearm with ammunition without licence,
- Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose,
- Resisting a peace officer,
- Unauthorized possession of a prohibited weapon,
- 2 counts of possession of a weapon contrary to a weapons possession prohibition order.
- Possession of liquor at an unlawful place,
- Operating a vehicle without a driver’s licence,
- Failure to remain at the scene of a collision,
Koe has already made an appearance in court for a bail hearing, and has been returned to police custody.
