Jean Marie River Bridge now open for public use

Construction on the Jean Marie River Bridge has been completed, and the bridge is now open for public use.

The bridge connects to Highway 1, and the GNWT states that it will improve safety and reliability compared to the bridge it is replacing. The project was completed ahead of schedule, and will help improve the Territory’s transportation network.

The previous bridge was approaching the end of its service life, and due to structural issues, required reduced speeds when crossing, and was limited to single-lane traffic. The old bridge was also under constant maintenance.

The new bridge allows for wider traffic, has a higher clearance for greater flood levels, and is designed in such a way that is expected to reduce maintenance.

Vince McKay, the Minister of Infrastructure, stated that the completion of the bridge “is an important investment in the Northwest Territories’ transportation system. This new bridge provides a safer, more reliable crossing for residents, businesses and everyone travelling along Highway 1.

“It also strengthens critical transportation infrastructure that supports economic development, improves connectivity and helps ensure northern communities remain connected to the services, supplies and opportunities they depend on. While the bridge is now open, drivers can expect to see construction workers at the site for about one more month as they finish the last of their work.
