United Way NWT launches donation program for wildfire evacuees
A total of $30k has already been donated from the Union of Northern Workers and the Public Service Alliance of Canada
To help support Northern communities affected by the current wildfires, United Way NWT has activated their Emergency Response Fund.
To that end, they will soon be launching a fundraising campaign in order to provide aid to the various organizations that are responding to the emerging community needs. The campaign has already seen early support with the Union of Northern Workers and the Public Service Alliance of Canada each donating $15,000.
This is not the first time that United Way has provided help for wildfire responses. During 2023, the group distributed more than $3.3 million through over 130 emergency grants. The group has experience when it comes to moving funding and resources quickly and responsibly in emergency situations.
Ben Linaker, the Board Chair for United Way, stated that “When emergencies happen in the North, communities don’t wait to help one another, and neither do we. United Way NWT’s Emergency Response Fund exists so local organizations can access flexible funding quickly, allowing them to respond to changing needs on the ground. We’re incredibly grateful to UNW, PSAC, and everyone who has already stepped forward. We invite anyone who is able to join us in helping Northerners care for Northerners.”
Donations made to the Emergency Response Fund will be invested through trusted local organizations who are providing aid to evacuees and to hosting communities.
