Rotary Club of YK prepares for Canada Day parade
Registration is open for any local groups and organizations who wish to enter the parade.
The Rotary Club of Yellowknife is already hard at work in planning the city’s Canada Day festivities, and have even shared the route for this year’s parade.
This parade always draws a large crowd to Franklin Avenue to watch their friends and neighbours celebrate their love for Canada. Last year saw several dozen entries of floats, decorated vehicles, and simply groups of people walking along the route.
Registration is still open for community groups, non-profit organizations, Indigenous organizations, and anyone else who may want to participate. All types of entries are possible, such as walking, dancing, vehicles, and towed flatbeds. No items are allowed to be thrown from vehicles. Any candy must be handed out by people who are walking along the route.
Canada Day (and the parade) is coming up on Wednesday, July 1st. Participants in the parade are asked to begin gathering at the Aquatic Centre at 10:15am, with the parade expected to begin at 11. Following the same route as last year, the parade will start and proceed north along Franklin Avenue, and will come to an end at Sir John Secondary School.
The Fifth Annual Canada Mile will lead off the parade, the foot race for all types of runners clearing the way for a loud and bright procession of decorated floats, pipe band, colour party, local dignitaries, marchers, cyclists, big trucks, classic cars and emergency vehicles.
The Canada Day Bicycle Decorating is also a big hit with the younger crowd. Rotary supplies the streamers, bangles and bobbles; all entrants need to bring their bicycle and creativity. All entrants will receive a small cash prize for their participation.
Additional festivities will be taking place at the Somba K’e Civic Plaza following the parade.
