Dene National Chief Mackenzie optimistic for future of Liberal majority government
“A majority government under Prime Minister Mark Carney brings renewed momentum for action on the urgent issues facing First Nations communities"
After making an appearance at the 2026 Liberal National Convention, Dene National Chief George Mackenzie shared a few words of excitement for the party’s recent successes.
Following the Liberal’s recent securement of a majority government, the Dene Nation feels that this will be a good opportunity to advance First Nations priorities in a meaningful way. While at the Convention, Chief Mackenzie spoke with various ministers, who provided updates on certain policy discussions and upcoming projects.
“A majority government under Prime Minister Mark Carney brings renewed momentum for action on the urgent issues facing First Nations communities, including the Crown’s legal obligations and commitments to our peoples,” stated Chief Mackenzie.
Back in December, Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke during the Assembly of First Nations’ Special Chiefs Assembly, where he committed to setting up a First Nations – First Ministers’ Meeting sometime this year, where First Nations leaders would be able to “set the agenda”. While that meeting isn’t expected to happen until Fall of 2026, Chief Mackenzie feels optimistic about what it may be able to accomplish.
“Self-determination and direct funding must serve as the foundation for our collective action.
“We recognize that such transformative change will not happen overnight, but the Fall 2026 meeting represents a historic opportunity for us to collaborate as Nations and lay the groundwork for a stronger Canada. We will set an agenda that fosters ongoing productive partnerships.”
Chief Mackenzie also commended the work of the Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations, Rebecca Alty, saying that her support adds to the hopes of constructive dialogue and tangible progress.
