Two men are facing charges — one for extortion with a firearm — after what RCMP call a “violent incident at a residence” related to the illegal drug trade in Fort Resolution.

On March 28th RCMP received a report of a violent incident at a residence in the community, stated a release.

Officers entered the residence and arrested two suspects, including an Alberta man who had just been released on March 9th on a probation order with conditions not to be in the Northwest Territories.

It’s unknown how many people were in the residence, but “parties involved known to each,” stated RCMP.

Police encountered the same two men the day previous after receiving a report of two suspicious individuals on a trail in the community.

Officers located the individuals, however there was no immediate evidence of criminality, and the subjects subsequently left the area.

Officers conducted a wider search of the area and located a hidden bag containing over 20 grams of suspected crack-cocaine, over $1000 in cash and a loaded pistol.

Further investigation linked the violent incident suspects to that bag of crack and cash.

Twenty-two-year-old Bilal Mohamed Ismail of Alberta, has been charged with a host of weapons offences — including extortion with, and careless use of, a firearm — trafficking, obstructing a peace officer and forcible confinement.

The second suspect, a 23-year-old Yellowknife man, was released on an undertaking to appear in court at a later date to answer to a charge of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking.
