The 2026 Traditional Games Championship, powered by NorthwesTel, took place over the weekend in Yellowknife.

Teams from across Northwest Territories competed in Dene Games and Northern Games, including: Triple Jump; Two-Foot High Kick; Snow Snake; One-Foot High Kick; Pole Push; and Stick Pull.

CKLB dropped by the Sir John Franklin High School Gymnasium on Sunday morning, where the youth were engaged in Stick Pull, a traditional competition designed to improve grip strength. It mimics the act of catching a slippery fish.

Competitors pull a greased wooden stick, aiming to pull it from their opponent’s hand.
