In an effort to expand support for people who are experiencing homelessness, the Northwest Territories Integration and Community Services group will be taking over operation of the Inuvik Warming Shelter.

The Warming Shelter is a vital piece of the Inuvik community, as it provides people who are experiencing homelessness with a safe and warm location to rest, that also provides them with basic needs and supports.

Now that the NWT ICS is taking over, the facility will be better able to provide those services. The NWT ICS will be working closely with Housing NWT and local community partners to allow for a smooth transition with minimal disruptions.

Erin Kellly, the President and CEO of Housing NWT, said that “Transitioning the Inuvik Warming Shelter to Northwest Territories Integration and Community Services reflects our ongoing commitment to ensuring homelessness services are guided by local voices.

“NWT ICS brings valuable frontline experience and a compassionate, person‑centered approach that will strengthen supports for residents who rely on the shelter. We look forward to supporting them as they take on this important role and continue building a safe, inclusive space for residents.”

Lucy Kuptana, the Minister responsible for Housing NWT chimed in as well, saying “Homelessness supports must reflect the community they serve, and it is encouraging to see Northwest Territories Integration and Community Services take on this important role. Placing the shelter’s operations with a local organization strengthens community leadership and ensures services remain responsive, compassionate, and closely connected to the people they support. This is welcome news that will help strengthen an important service for Inuvik’s vulnerable residents.”
