A routine check by RCMP on a repeat offender to ensure compliance with bail conditions ended up in finding the person in a vehicle allegedly stolen at knifepoint and with an accomplice.

The offender was not at the Yellowknife address the court ordered him to reside at – in fact, RCMP believe he never was there – and instead located the offender in a vehicle a short time later.

When police approached the vehicle, the offender tried to drive off, “but was not successful, and was subsequently arrested and removed from the vehicle by officers.”

Officer later determined the offender had stolen the vehicle from a victim at knifepoint and sexually assaulted them, with the assistance of an accomplice, who was also later found and arrested.

As a result of the incident, 34-year-old Joshua Desjarlais, of Yellowknife, has been charged with: Robbery with a weapon; possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, uttering threats, sexual assault with a weapon, operation of a vehicle while prohibited; resisting a peace officer, and two counts of failure to comply with a release order.

Desjarlais had been released from custody by the courts only one week earlier, on February 16th after being charged with drug and driving-related offences.

Also, 27-year-old Autumn Baton of Yellowknife has been charged with: Robbery with a weapon and failure to comply with a probation order

Both are now remanded until further court appearances.
