There are wind warnings on the ground and geomagnetic storm alerts in the sky today and into tomorrow in the Northwest Territories.

The stiff winds and blowing snow have triggered Environment Canada yellow warnings for the Fort Resolution region including Hwy. 6 and the Hay River Region including Enterprise, while Paulatuk is under a Yellow Warning for a blizzard.

Motorists need to be aware that visibility can be reduced suddenly and unexpected snow drifts across highways can catch a wheel, causing control issues.

The U.S.’s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Space Weather Prediction Center has issued a G4, or severe, geomagnetic storm alert, today and into tomorrow.

That means excellent Aurora viewing opportunities across the NWT, should the skies in your area not be cloudy.

And the moderate temperatures felt in some regions today will be blown out by these winds tomorrow, with more seasonal cold temperatures returning by Thursday.
