Yellowknife man arrested after fleeing from police and reporting fake shooting
In a ploy to escape his own arrest, the suspect called the RCMP to report gunfire in Ndilǫ and draw officers away. It did not work.
A Yellowknife man is in police custody after fleeing from a traffic stop and attempting to lead officers on a wild goose chase.
The incident occurred around 1:30 on November 22nd. During the traffic stop, all four occupants of the vehicle attempted to flee, barely missing a collision with the investigating officer. The driver of the vehicle was determined to be 27-year-old Austin Moore, who had stolen the vehicle, and had further arrest warrants to his name for outstanding charges.
The search for Moore continued into the 28th until the RCMP were able to locate the man at a residence on 53rd street. As the officers were closing in on him, Moore placed a call to the dispatcher reporting gunshots in Ndilǫ in an attempt to divert police resources elsewhere.
Officers were quickly able to determine the call as fraudulent, and Moore was arrested without incident.
Moore is now facing the following charges:
- Public mischief
- Assaulting a peace officer with weapon
- Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle
- Flight from a peace officer
- Operating a vehicle without a valid licence
- Operating a vehicle without valid insurance
- Robbery
- Intimidation
- Failure to comply with order
When he was arrested, Moore was already out on bail for charges of aggravated assault and breaking and entering. Moore is now in custody and will appear in court on December 9th. He will make another appearance in court for his previous charges on February 5th.
